Doorknob: D’ooooh!
Alice: Oh! I beg your pardon…
Doorknob: Whew. Quite all right, but you did give me quite a turn.
Have you ever considered a doorknob as something other than a necessary tool to open said door? If you have, then you’re in good company with me – I consider hardware to be jewelry for doors. Whether highly decorative or elegantly simple, beautifully designed door hardware can instantly elevate the quality of any door. Think of stunning hardware on a simple door akin to ravishing earrings accompanying a simple black cocktail dress.
Selecting correct door hardware is a studied and sensitive task. Style, appropriateness and function all convene in this seemingly mundane object. The wrong latch can visually destroy even the most meticulously designed door. Conversely, a perfectly chosen knob can raise a common door to higher poise.
Do you want to detect if something is cheap or poorly made? Simply put your hand on it. Given the great number of sensitive nerve endings in the human hand, one touch can always sense quality and heft. A shoddily made doorknob is as evident as bad buttons on a nice jacket.
Who knew the common everyday doorknob held such sway?

I love great hardware and believe it can make a huge difference. One more little, but lovely, detail in a home.
Thanks for your always wonderful posts.
